I found it while I was out running one Summer morning. I passed a garage sale and saw it peeking out from from the shadows inside. I liked it, and so I trotted home, and told Del I needed to go back and pick up a big ol' frame.
A what?
I was not kidding. We had to put it on the roof of the car and drive home with both of us holding on to it with one arm from inside.
I even did some minor haggling and got the lady to knock it down from $25 to $15.
And then it sat around while I decided what to do with it. Walker took a mighty interest in it, and hounded it from day one. Tipping it over, sitting on it, chewing on it. So finally I decided that I would make it a chalk board. I think chalk boards might be a little passe these days, but I decided two things...
1. I don't care if chalk boards are passe.
And
2. I don't care if my handwriting, (which I do not adore.) is uneven in size, spacing, and that the lines are not straight. I think it adds to the character. And maybe when I switch out what is written on it, I'll straighten it out. Or not.
I put the 13th Article of Faith revealed through the first prophet of our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) on the board, because I read a talk by President Gordon B. Hinckley, (another prophet,) that this Article of Faith encompasses all that we should strive to be as Latter Day Saints. I really loved that thought, and decided it would be a good one to try to encourage my children to be familiar with. And it is not a bad reminder for me either, considering I stuck it on top of the piano, and it is the first thing I see when I walk down the stairs in the morning, maybe it will influence my day. And what better place for a garage sale frame, than on top of my hand-me-down, 1970's piano?
It was easy to make, so I can change my mind if a different idea comes along. I just had a piece of particle board cut to dimension, and painted it with chalkboard paint. So I am open to ideas on what it could morph into in the future. If I ever feel the urge to get a massive family portrait done, voila! We have a frame!
I am doubting that will happen. My face alone would have to be several inches wide. No thanks.
I have also thought about getting a piece of mirror cut someday.
Someday, we'll see!
I kind of like it, so just though I'd share. If you have any brilliant thoughts on it's future use, please feel free to fill me in!

Great idea! Glad you figured out what to do with it! :)
I love it Jess. That is a great idea!
I think it's cute! Chalkboards may be passe, but I still love them.
You could put quotes on it and change the quotes from week to week or put a favorite children's poem (or one of your favorite poems) on it. You could put a nonsense sentence on it and have your older ones try to read it (and then laugh when you have visitors at your house and they read it). :)
I LOVE chalkboards -- and I have a chalkboard in my kitchen. :) I write things on it all of the time and love watching my kids try to figure out what I've written (usually silly sentences). :)
And I think it's a TERRIFIC idea to have that be in your living room above your piano! You are a great decorator! I would have NEVER thought to do that. I STINK at interior decorating. The only thing I know (and understand) is symmetry and the rule of three (or thirds?). :)
I like it...A LOT! And how fun will that be for your kids birthdays to have a big ol' "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" when they walk down your stairs. Also, it's a lot more personal than say, vinyl and a lot easier (and cheaper :o) to change. Fabulous idea!
What a great idea! When your kids start working on memorizing the articles of faith you can change it up and that would be a great way to practice daily on memorizing them.
BTW I would have had no idea the piano was a hand me down 1970's one. It looks so nice and well taken care of!
Thanks Maranda. It has about a gallon of black paint and polyurethane on it. I painted it right when I got it years ago. It is that scary blonde fake finish underneath.
